The Old Schoolhouse Museum
The Schoolhouse was built in 1891 using bricks from the 1861 schoolhouse before it. It was the grade school for the area for 48 years until the village centralized education in 1938 and everyone moved to Dundee Central. The old Schoolhouse, long since neglected, was rescued by the Historical Society in 1972 and turned into a museum. It first officially opened on July 12th, 1975.
The Old Schoolhouse is the main part of the Museum and is also where we house all of our written records. A large oak table offers plenty of space for people to come in and do genealogical research. Visit with some of the town's historical families in the parlor set-up we have. There are two rooms upstairs that house various other artifacts and objects. One is a military themed room that has many uniforms from local veterans and countless artifacts from the Civil War, World War I and II, the Vietnam War and the Korean War. Also found inside this room are Free Mason, I.O.O.F and Legion papers and regalia. The second room is devoted entirely to the Starkey Seminary and the many one-room schoolhouses that once dotted our landscape. The Seminary was a large school located close to Freedom Village. There are exhibits all about children in this room from the cradle to graduation, including toys and dolls from across the world and a small exhibit featuring the One room school houses that once dotted the landscape around Yates County. We also have a library in the back filled with old books and maps that is available on request.
Genealogical Research Fees:
Genealogical & Resource files access fee: $15.00
With assistance: $20.00
Copies: $0.25 per page
Photo Scan on Photo paper: $2.00 per page
Visitors are welcome to take photographs anywhere inside the museum, but please be mindful of the flash on our more delicate items.
